Working direct with farmers

We have come from a grass roots organisation that started off in an office above our cafe. From the beginning, we embraced the values of fairness, decency, warmth, kindness and the pursuit of excellence. Our approach to coffee sourcing is no different. If we’re to continue to create excellent coffee, we need to ensure our farmers are fairly rewarded. At Caffè Nero, we owe our reputation to sourcing high quality beans, and we pay premium prices for those beans.

At present, the vast majority of the beans in our unique blend are sourced from identifiable and traceable sources, and we are working hard to ensure we purchase every bean this way.

We’re also working with the Rainforest Alliance on the certification of our beans and on encouraging sustainable livelihoods for our farmers, taking responsibility not just for great coffee, but supporting communities and the environment where our coffee is grown.

Modern slavery statement

In response to the Modern Slavery Act, we engaged with an external consultancy to better understand our potential exposure to modern slavery risks in our direct business and supply chain. For each business area, we reviewed factors such as recruitment practices, working conditions and geographical location.

We are using this information to determine and prioritise practical and robust actions that ensure we always operate in an ethical manner.

Waste & Recycling

In our managed estate our store teams separate out the waste to allow collection of recyclable materials. We have achieved zero waste to landfill in London since 2010 and 50% of our waste in London is transported away via barges on the River Thames reducing our road miles.

Since July 2016 we have been collecting our used coffee grounds from 122 stores in London for processing into fuels which power biomass boilers.

Milk & Dairy

At Caffè Nero we are proud to support the British Dairy industry and all our fresh milk and cream comes from farms right across the UK.

All of our supplying farms, processors and distributors are Red Tractor Assured. This means our milk and cream is certified as UK sourced, the farm standards and supply chain are regularly audited, and the treatment and welfare of the dairy cows is safeguarded and regularly monitored.

Our Food

Food is an important part of our café culture and so our hunt for the highest quality, freshest food never stops.

Our development team constantly reacts and adapts, looking to where we can reduce salt, fat, sugar, or offer alternative products.

We’re transparent: everything is clearly labelled and all nutritional information can be found on our website.
